What is lorem ipsum?

Lorem ipsum is placeholder text: scrambled Latin that designers pour into a layout while the real copy is still being written. It comes from a treatise Cicero finished in 45 BC, mangled by a printer some fifteen centuries later, and it has been filling proofs, mockups and templates ever since. The passage everyone recognises opens Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit – and it means nothing at all, which is precisely the job it was hired to do.

What the Latin actually says

Nothing coherent. The words are real Latin fragments, but they have been cut, reordered and truncated until the sentences stopped working. Lorem is the clearest evidence: there is no such Latin word. It is the tail of dolorem, “pain”, left behind when a compositor broke the line in the middle of a word.

The sentence underneath the wreckage is an argument about why nobody seeks pain for its own sake. Read it beside the placeholder and the surgery is obvious.

Other names for the same thing

Placeholder text, dummy text, filler text, greeking – and Blindtext in German, faux-texte in French, texto de relleno in Spanish, ダミーテキスト in Japanese. They all name the same move: putting something word-shaped where the real copy will go. Lorem ipsum is the most famous instance of it, and a random text generator is what most people reach for to produce more of it.

Where it came from

The source is De finibus bonorum et malorum – “On the Ends of Good and Evil” – Cicero’s book-length examination of what makes a life worth living, written in 45 BC. The relevant passage is section 1.10.32.

An unknown printer in the 1500s scrambled that passage to make a specimen book, and the scrambled version proved more durable than the original. It travelled on Letraset dry-transfer sheets in the 1960s, then shipped inside desktop publishing software in the 1980s, which is how it reached every design tool in use today. The trail back to Cicero was reconstructed in the 1980s by Richard McClintock, a Latin scholar at Hampden-Sydney College, who followed the least common word in the passage – consectetur – into the classical sources.

The Latin — Cicero, De finibus bonorum et malorum, 1.10.32

Sed ut perspiciatis, unde omnis iste natus error sit voluptatem accusantium doloremque laudantium, totam rem aperiam eaque ipsa, quae ab illo inventore veritatis et quasi architecto beatae vitae dicta sunt, explicabo. In English — H. Rackham, Loeb Classical Library, 1914

But I must explain to you how all this mistaken idea of denouncing pleasure and praising pain was born and I will give you a complete account of the system, and expound the actual teachings of the great explorer of the truth, the master-builder of human happiness. No one rejects, dislikes, or avoids pleasure itself, because it is pleasure, but because those who do not know how to pursue pleasure rationally encounter consequences that are extremely painful. Nor again is there anyone who loves or pursues or desires to obtain pain of itself, because it is pain, but because occasionally circumstances occur in which toil and pain can procure him some great pleasure.

What lorem ipsum hides

Latin filler has an even texture. No long compound words, no prices, no question marks, no line that runs three times longer than the one above it. A column set in lorem ipsum looks calm because nothing in it is difficult, and that calm is borrowed – it belongs to the filler, not to the design.

Real copy arrives with a 24-character product name that breaks the grid, a currency symbol, an exclamation mark, a sentence that will not fit on one line. A layout that has only ever met lorem ipsum meets all of that for the first time after launch, when the client pastes their own words in and asks why it looks different from the mockup.

Placeholder text that reads like the real thing

The fix is not to stop using placeholder text – it is to use placeholder text shaped like the copy that will replace it. Every industry on this site has its own bank of written copy: headlines, intro paragraphs, service lists with prices, team bios, quotes and FAQ answers, in five languages. Pick the trade closest to your project, set how much you need, and paste in words your layout will actually have to hold.

Questions about placeholder text

What does lorem ipsum mean?
Nothing, and that is deliberate. The words are Latin fragments with the beginnings and endings knocked off – lorem is not a Latin word at all, it is what was left of dolorem (“pain”) when a printer cut the line. The original sentence is about the pursuit of pleasure and the avoidance of pain; the placeholder version means nothing, so nobody reads it instead of looking at the layout.
Where does lorem ipsum come from?
From De finibus bonorum et malorum, a treatise on ethics written by Cicero in 45 BC. The passage is section 1.10.32. A printer in the 1500s scrambled it to make a type specimen, and the scrambled version outlived the original by four centuries – carried first on Letraset transfer sheets in the 1960s, then by desktop publishing software in the 1980s.
Is lorem ipsum bad for SEO?
Not as a Latin text – search engines do not penalise a language. The damage is what it stands for: a page that reaches the index full of placeholder text is a page with nothing on it to rank, and Google’s own guidance treats pages that fail to serve a purpose as low quality. Placeholder copy in a mockup is harmless; placeholder copy on a published URL is a thin page wearing a design.
Is it safe to publish lorem ipsum on a live site?
No. It has shipped to production often enough to be a genre of screenshot, and once it is live it can be indexed, shared and quoted. Keep placeholder text behind staging authentication, and if a page must go live before its copy exists, keep the page out of the sitemap until the words arrive.
What should I use instead of lorem ipsum?
Text shaped like the copy that will eventually replace it: the same sentence lengths, the same numbers and prices, the same awkward product names. That is what this site generates – copy banks written for 53 industries, in five languages, so a layout is tested against words it will actually have to hold.
