The café opened in 2017 in what used to be a launderette, and for the first six months half the neighbourhood still walked in carrying washing. We kept the long window, put in twenty-six seats and a bench for people on their own, and started roasting in the back the following spring.

On the counter

  • Espresso & filter — Two grinders, one house blend and one rotating single origin. Flat white £3.20, filter £3.00 with a free refill if you are staying. Oat, soy and whole milk, no charge for any of them.
  • Our own roast — We roast 40 kg a week on a 5 kg drum roaster in the back. Retail bags are 250 g at £9.50, roasted within four days of you buying them. Whole bean, or ground to suit your grinder.
  • Breakfast, 7:30–11:30 — Eggs on toast, a bowl of oats with poached rhubarb, and a bacon sandwich that is the reason half our regulars are regulars. Nothing on the breakfast list is over £8.
  • Lunch, 11:30–15:00 — Soup with sourdough at £6.50, three sandwiches made to order, and a salad plate that changes with whatever the greengrocer has that morning. Takeaway boxes are compostable and cost nothing extra.

Espresso is a seasonal blend — currently a washed Colombian with something Brazilian underneath it, which sounds fussy and simply means it tastes good with milk. The filter changes every fortnight. If you would rather not think about any of that, ask for a coffee and we will make you a coffee.

The generator above shuffles the whole bank. Below is the rest of it, laid out block by block, so you can read the words before you paste them anywhere.

Hero lines

  • Coffee, and somewhere to sit
  • Open from 7:30, seven days
  • Your third cup is on us

A single-origin filter, a properly made flat white, and a corner table nobody will move you off when your meeting overruns.

We roast 40 kg a week in the back room, which is why the shop smells the way it does at 8:00 on a Tuesday.

Breakfast until 11:30, lunch until 15:00, and cake for as long as it lasts — which on a good day is not long.

Team bios

Lucia Marchetti — Owner & roaster

Lucia spent seven years buying coffee for other people’s shops before deciding she would rather roast it herself. She is on the roaster three mornings a week and behind the bar on Saturdays, and she will happily talk about water hardness for longer than you want.

Ben Achterberg — Head barista

Ben trains everyone who works here, which mostly means teaching them to stop rushing. He has competed twice, come nowhere twice, and says he learned more from the second one. He can spot an underextracted shot from across the room.

Rana Belkacem — Kitchen

Rana runs the small kitchen and writes the specials board, which is why the soup is better than a café soup needs to be. She bakes the almond croissants at 5:30 and insists that the second proof is the whole secret.

Quotes

“I have been coming since the week they opened and they still ask after my mother. The coffee is excellent, obviously, but that is not really why I walk past two other places to get here.”

Margaret Ilsley, In most mornings

“They let me sit with one filter coffee for three hours writing a dissertation chapter, and then brought me a slice of cake “because you look like you need it”. Reader, I did!”

Tom Egwuatu, Postgraduate student

“We order 2 kg a month for the office and it arrives on a Tuesday without fail. Nobody has complained about the coffee since, which in an office of forty people is close to a miracle.”

Sasha Bright, Office manager

FAQ answers

What time do you open?

7:30 on weekdays, 8:30 at weekends, and we close at 16:00 every day. The kitchen stops at 15:00 but the counter keeps going. We are shut on the 25th and 26th of December and open every other day of the year.

Do you take cash as well as cards?

Cash, card or phone, whichever you have. There is a float in the till and nobody will sigh at you for paying with a £20 note. No minimum spend, no card surcharge, and the tip jar is genuinely optional.

Can I bring my own cup?

Please do. It is 30p off every drink and it saves us a lid. If you forget, the takeaway cups are compostable, though we would rather you sat down — around 60% of what we make is drunk in the room, which is unusual and rather nice.

Do you do oat milk?

Oat, soy and a coconut option, all at no extra cost. The oat is a barista version that behaves properly under steam. If you have a nut allergy, say so when you order — the almond croissants live behind the same counter and we would rather be careful.

Closing lines

We are the shop with the long window and the bench outside, halfway down on the left. Come in, take the table by the plug socket, and do not feel you have to order again just to keep it.

Open 7:30–16:00 on weekdays and 8:30–16:00 at weekends. Dogs welcome, prams manageable, and there is room outside on the days it is not raining. The good cake is usually gone by two — you have been warned!
