We fitted our first split system in 2011, in a top-floor flat where the tenant had given up sleeping in July. Fourteen years and roughly 3,900 installations later, the work has not changed much: measure the room, count the windows, work out where the heat is getting in, then choose the smallest unit that can beat it.

What we install

  • Wall-mounted split systems — One indoor unit, one outdoor condenser, a 65 mm core drilled through the wall and pipework hidden in trunking. Rated between 2.0 and 7.1 kW, and quiet enough at 19 dB to sleep beside.
  • Multi-split installations — A single outdoor unit feeding up to five indoor heads, each with its own thermostat. Ideal for flats with no room for a bank of condensers on the balcony — and considerably tidier to look at.
  • Ducted and concealed systems — Fitted into a ceiling void or loft with linear grilles in each room. Needs 300 mm of clearance and a proper fall on the condensate run, so we survey the void before quoting anything.
  • Heat pump changeover — Every system we fit heats as well as cools, holding 21 °C indoors down to about -12 °C outside. Most clients stop using their electric heaters altogether by the second winter.

Most of the bad jobs we are called out to share one fault — the unit is too big. An oversized system cools the air in six minutes, shuts off before it has pulled any moisture out, and leaves you with a cold, clammy room and a compressor that short-cycles itself to an early death.

Dario Kemp — Founder & lead engineer

Dario spent nine years on commercial chillers before deciding domestic work was more interesting, mostly because you have to be neat about it. He still does every survey himself. Ask him about condensate falls and set aside twenty minutes!

Yuliya Marchenko — Installation engineer

Yuliya joined in 2018 and holds the refrigerant handling certificate alongside the electrical qualification, which means she can complete a full install without a second trade on site. She is the reason our pipework runs straight. Keeps bees.

Callum keeps the maintenance calendar and chases you about it, politely, once a year. He came from an air-source heating background and can diagnose most faults over the phone before the van is loaded. Owns three motorbikes, rides one.

FAQ answers

How long does an installation take?

A single wall unit is a one-day job for two engineers, start to finish, including commissioning and showing you the controls. Multi-splits run to two or three days. You get that number at survey stage and we do not pad it.

Will it be noisy for the neighbours?

The outdoor unit is the part that makes noise — around 48 dB at one metre, roughly a fridge in a quiet kitchen. We site it away from bedroom windows and on anti-vibration mounts, and we walk the boundary with you before deciding.

What does it actually cost to run?

On a hot afternoon a 3.5 kW unit draws about 1.1 kW, so roughly $0.31 an hour at current rates. Used sensibly — 24 °C rather than 18 °C, doors shut — most households add $40 to $70 across an entire summer.

Do you service systems you did not fit?

Yes, and about 30% of our service work is exactly that. The first visit takes longer because we have to establish what is in there and whether it was charged correctly, so it is $130. After that you pay the standard rate.

Closing lines
